Argentina made ambitious approach to hire Pep Guardiola after World Cup 2018 failure

ARGENTINA made an ambitious attempt to hire Pep Guardiola as boss after their disappointing World Cup campaign.

Argentine FA chief Claudio Tapia admitted they enquired about the Manchester City manager but were stunned by his wages.

He said: “We enquired, it was a possibility, but we enquired. You have to have a big wallet, a large backing.

“It’s a lot [Guardiola’s salary] and we have to get loans for everything. We made consultations but it is very difficult, I am telling you the truth.

“We made an enquiry but we did not think it was so much. We tried to speak, but he stayed there.”

Argentina are without a manager after letting Jorge Sampaoli’s contract run out in July.

The South American nation were knocked out of the World Cup by France in the last-16 but only just made it out of the group stage despite their star-studded squad.

Guardiola has a brilliant relationship with Lionel Messi from their four seasons together at Barcelona.

In fact, Messi won the Ballon d’Or in every year he played under the Spaniard, picking it up just once since.

Former Argentina ace Lionel Scaloni and Pablo Aimar have been named as the coaches for next month’s friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia.

Guardiola extended his City contract in May until 2021.

His City team smashed ELEVEN Premier League records on their way to winning the title last season
